Dr. JanetTHOMAS(née Hissey) 18th December 1945 - 2nd April 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Janet Thomas aged 79, on 2nd of April 2025. Born in Cardiff on 18th of December 1945.

Janet was a devoted wife to David, cherish mother to Rhian, Delyth, Eirwen and Rhodri and a beloved Nana to Euan, Aled, Lucy and Sammy.

From a young age, Janet aspired to a career in medicine, a dream she pursued with remarkable dedication and excellence. She earned her place at the Welsh National School of medicine after achieving outstanding results at Cowbridge High School for Girls in the 1960s.

Upon graduation, Janet completed her training within the Coventry hospital group and began her medical career as a General practitioner in Kenilworth. After marrying David, they returned to South Wales to raise their family, where she joined the practise at Central Surgery Pontyclun.

Janet's expertise and passion for Women's Health led her to specialise in Family Planning and Cervical Cytology, and she was appointed as a consultant in Women's Health in 1992 for the Rhonda Cynon Taff and Gwent health authorities. Her excellence in her field earned her recognition through numerous interviews on radio, television and in the press. Through her dedicated advocacy for early symptom recognition and preventative care, Janet undoubtedly saved many lives.

Despite her career being cut short by the early onset of severe rheumatoid arthritis, Janet remained committed to sharing her knowledge through clinics, hospitals and community outreach. Her meticulous attention to research and detail left a lasting impact on her colleagues, patients and all who knew her.

Janet's legacy of determination, compassion and dedication continues through her children who each achieved honours degrees at university and embarked on successful careers in a range of fields different to her own.

She would be remembered with deep affection and respect by her family, friends, colleagues and the countless individuals whose lives she touched. Janet will be greatly missed.

Funeral Wednesday 30th April, service at St. David's Church, Miskin at 12.00pm, followed by a private interment at Cefn Y Parc Cemetery.
